Ochre pigment and Natural Dyes

I've been making a travel folder using handmade paper cloth coloured with 

Ochre pigment and stitched with wool dyed with plants. 

Had lots of fun making this!

Weaving on the peg loom

Working with a peg loom is fun, the weaving grows quickly and I can use all the naturally dyed wools from last summer.

                                             

 The warp threads are threaded through the pegs.

                                             

I begin weaving using some Indigo dyed Shetland wool.

                                            

The weaving grows so I can pull the warp threads through.

                                           

The pegs slide through the weaving so it lays on the threads.

                                              

 Eventually the weaving is free of the pegs.

Growing Colour

Started getting ready to plant seeds to grow dye plants for this years colour harvest. Looking forward to finding out if I can add any new colour flowers to the basket.

Recycling jars to vases Shabby Chic style

Natural Dye and Ochre Pigment.....

Using the Ochre pigment to colour paper to make Shabby Chic style vases for the Shetland wool flowers. These have been created using wool dyed with plants grown in the Spindrift dye garden.

 

Threads and fleece hand dyed. Woad, grown in Shetland, was used to dye wool for the felted background. Machine stitch and hand stitch was added to create a feel of ocean movement and colour.

Glorious colours from the garden

Amazing how the colours from plants can be transferred to wool as natural dyes.

Onions to dye for.........

The onions grew really well this year in the garden. The first dyed wool using dried onion skins seemed to reflect autumn colours back to me :)
